Area

Afea Temple

The Temple of Aphaia / Afea is arguably the jewel in the crown of Aegina island. Whether or not you are especially interested in history and archaeology, failure to visit this outstanding monument would be a great pity. It is a stunning example of ancient architecture set in a beautiful natural forested area with sensational views across the island to the sea.

Saint Nektarios

A massive, recently-built church sits up on a hill in the inland area known as Kontos on Aegina island, just a few miles from the port. Built for the most recent Greek Orthodox saint - Agios Nektarios - it is visited by large numbers of people every year, many of them seeking help from this miracle-working saint, who died in 1920. Near the church is a complex of buildings which include chapels, a store selling icons, holy oil, candles, postcards and the like, the old house in which the holy man lived, and the monastery inhabited by a small community of nuns who tend to the spiritual needs of those who come to seek solace and healing.

Paleohora

On a steep hill adjacent to the church and monastery of Agios Nektarios is located Aegina's version of Mystras* - Paleachora**, which means literally, "Old Town", and which was for a millennium (9th century - early 19th century AD) the island capital. The setting itself is magnificent, especially in spring, when all vegetation is a brilliant green both on the hill and in the valley below, seen in panoramic splendor from high above. All that remains of this hill village with its castle are its churches, rumored to number 365 - one for every day of the year - though this figure is unsupported by research. Of the 70 churches whose existence on the hill are confirmed, 33 churches remain and are open to visitors. Five have been restored and are in good condition, though most remain in great need of restoration. They belong to the Byzantine Service under the Greek Ministry of Culture, which authorizes any projects carried out here.

Agia Marina

Agia(Santa) Marina is a well known and a favourite summer destination for greek and foreign tourists. It has a big sandy beach, well organized with water sports available and the waters are not very deep. The beach is 500 meters long with many big pine trees. At the beach, there is the church of Santa Marina, which celebrates its name day on the 17th of July.
